Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards is an organization of concerned community members and their allies who are working to stop the destruction of our communities by surface coal mining, to improve the quality of life in our area, and to help rebuild sustainable communities.

SAMS is committed to creating just, social change through the empowerment of individuals and communities. SAMS operates with a strong set of environmental justice values that translate into the organization’s daily work of empowerment, collective strength and pride in native Appalachian culture and heritage.

SAMS has members in the coalfield communities of Virginia, with a concentration of membership in Wise County, Virginia. We welcome all who are willing to fight for justice.
