People Taking Action to get Results

SOCM is a 34 year old state-wide, multi-racial grassroots community organization in Tennessee working for environmental, economic, and social justice. We are working to create a real democracy in which ordinary people have a say in issues that affect them. We believe that it is in working across lines of race, age, and income that we build a world that is fair and equitable for all. Throughout its 34 year history, the abuse of communities by the coal industry has been one of SOCM’s critical issues. SOCM currently organizes to stop mountaintop removal strip mining locally and to put in place new state water quality policies to virtually eliminate this destructive form of mining in Tennessee.
