Heartwood is a cooperative network of grassroots groups, individuals, and local businesses working to protect and sustain healthy forests and vital human communities in the nation’s heartland, from the Appalachian Mountains to the river valleys of the Great Plains, and from the Great Lakes to the Deep South.
Working across political and administrative boundaries, Heartwood seeks to unite the region’s inhabitants in appreciation and defense of the natural world and to replace an ethic of waste and exploitation with one of reverence, kinship, and care. Heartwood applies the law and available human and financial resources to protect local forests and communities. Over the past two decades, Heartwood has protected tens of thousands of acres from clear-cutting, strip mining, oil and gas drilling, and other forms of abuse.
