So, you’ve gone to rallies, public hearings, demonstrations, and meetings. You’ve sent letters, made calls, signed petitions and organized in your community. And yet the state. the governor, the regulatory agencies and Dominion have ignored the demands of thousands of Virginians, near and far, by permitting Dominion’s dirty Wise Co. Power Plant.
But the fight is not yet over!
The people of Southwest Virginia are not giving up…and neither should you.
In the courts and in the streets, Dominion and the rest of Virginia need to know that this plant is not acceptable for our future.
Join us for mountaintop removal site tours, local music, service projects, hiking trips, workshops, and a chance to enjoy the best of Wise County. The weekend will be an opportunity to meet the people and the land that are being directly hurt by the coal and energy companies greed, as well as a chance for you to learn the skills necessary to bring the fight for a sustainable energy future to your hometown. Events will begin on Friday evening at 8 p.m. and will end on Sunday at 5 p.m. with a Prayer Vigil for the Future of SW Virginia.
Where: Wise County, Virginia
When: September 12 -14
Why: To learn about mountaintop removal and to experience the beauty of Southwest Virginia.
What to Bring: You, your family, your friends, a tent and sleeping bag for camping (other options are available by request), a camera, notebook, and an open mind.
Plan to stay Sunday afternoon for a Prayer Vigil for the Future of Southwest Virginia with Christians for the Mountains. The vigil will take place from 5 – 6 p.m. in Wise County.
Food and accommodations will be provided at no cost, but donations will be gladly accepted to support local efforts. Travel scholarships are available by request.
Stay Tuned for more information, or go ahead and email your questions. An agenda will be posted shortly.
To all Virginian Climate activists, there will be a chance over the weekend to hold meetings and advance planning for Va Power Shift. There is a block of time set aside on Sunday for this!
